・今年のペナントレースは混戦模様だが, どうやら巨人が一歩抜け出たようだ. This year's pennant race has been a toss-up, but it now looks as though the Giants have pulled a step ahead of the pack.

・〔作品などが認められて〕 これでやっと師匠に一歩近づけた気がします. With this, I feel as though I've finally taken a step closer to my teacher [master].

3 〔少しの程度〕

●あと一歩のところで犯人を取り逃がしてしまった. I was this close to catching the culprit before I let him slip away.

・交渉はあと一歩で妥結というところまでこぎつけたが, 最後まで反対する国があって結局まとまらなかった. The negotiations came this close to a workable compromise, but there were countries that stayed opposed to the end and final consensus was never reached.

・いま一歩 =いまひとつ

・うそは犯罪の一歩手前の行為だ. Lying is one step away from crime. | Lying is but one remove from crime.

・彼は死の一歩手前で救出された. He was saved from the very jaws of death.

・彼の会社は破産の一歩手前だ. His company is just one step away from bankruptcy.

●…まであと一歩のところにある be on the (very) brink [verge, threshold, eve] of 《bankruptcy, ruin》; be within an inch of….

一歩も譲らない do not yield [budge] an inch; hold [stand] one's ground

・一歩も譲らない態度 an ironbound [inflexible] attitude

・両者一歩も譲らない構えだった. Both of them took an unyielding stance.

・あの男は言いだしたら一歩も譲らない. He will never retreat an inch from anything he's said. | Anything he says tends to be fixed in stone.

・その交渉で彼は超大国の大統領を相手に一歩も引かなかった. At the negotiations he held his ground firmly against the president of his superpower adversary.

・私の研究はあれから一歩も進んでいない. My studies have [research has] not advanced a whit since then.

・現内閣の諸政策は前内閣のそれからほとんど一歩も出ていない. The policies of the current Cabinet have advanced hardly at all beyond those of its predecessor.

・彼の発表した理論は従来の考え方から一歩も出ていない. The theory that he published in no way departs from standard views [goes beyond the accepted wisdom] on the subject.

●一歩譲って…としても…. Conceding [Admitting, Granting] that….

・ここで一歩譲って彼の案を取り入れたとしても, 計画全体の趣旨は変わらない. Even if we were to compromise a little to include his proposal, it would not make for any change in the essentials of the plan itself.

・通勤の便ではこちらの物件に一歩譲りますが, 環境と価格を考えるとこのマンションのほうがお買い得だと思います. This apartment concedes something to the other property in terms of commuter convenience, but if you think in terms of environment and cost, then I think it's the better buy.

・ときには一歩引いて, 全体を見渡すことも必要だよ. Sometimes you have to back up a bit and take a look at the whole picture.

・ここはもう一歩踏み込んだ考察がほしかった. Here I would've liked a slightly more in-depth analysis.

・危なかった. 一歩間違うと大事故になるところだった. That was a close one! Another hairbreadth and we'd have had a serious accident.

・検察の権力は強大であり, その行使のしかたを一歩間違うと弾圧につながる. Enormous authority is vested in the prosecution authorities; a slight error in its application can lead to (political) oppression.
